Prioritize Passion Over Money
My mistakes in business and the lessons I learned
Dear Dreamers,
Passion will make you rich, but being rich won’t make you passionate. A high net worth doesn’t guarantee your happiness, but spending every day doing something that lights you up and adds value to your life is as close to a guarantee as you will find.
In my first business, my YouTube automation company, I made the mistake of trying to find the quickest path to earning a high income rather than looking long-term at what I love to do.
After ten months of running UpWell, finally seeing some good revenue, I reached a point where I could go all in and make a lot of money; however, my heart wasn’t in it anymore. My purely financial motivation had finally caught up to me, and I felt burnt out. I realized that everything I’d learned— how to optimize YouTube videos for virality, how to manage multiple employees, how to manage spending to grow vs a limited budget— was super important and could help me in future endeavors, but I’d reached diminishing marginal utility. It was time to pursue something more fulfilling; I was no longer excited to manage my company.
So, I pivoted. I took everything I learned from YouTube Automation—content strategy, business management, engaging an audience—and applied it to what I love most: deep, meaningful conversations with smart people. I launched my dream podcast, interviewing people who have pursued what lights them up in life. I aim to inspire others to chase their dreams as I am chasing mine. We deserve nothing less than our dreams; don’t let anybody tell you differently.
I will be transparent: As of right now, I have not made a single cent from my podcast, and it will probably be at least a few months before I do. But that isn’t the point. Now that money is only a potential side effect instead of the main driver of intention, I feel much more fulfilled.
I don’t want to work hard on my podcast because of the money I could make, but because of how it makes me feel inside and the potential impact I could have on others. I wish everyone could understand how it feels to wake up every morning excited to work on something.
The Grateful Podcast:
I have a podcast where I interview people much smarter and more qualified than me talking about how you can live a more purposeful life full of gratitude and ambition.
I release episodes every Monday where I go over a lesson I’ve recently learned.
Every Wednesday I release an episode with a very cool guest. This week is a GREAT one with my best friend. You would love it.
You can subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or find the video version on YouTube.
